If you find yourself in the bush and in need of warmth, or something to cook on, knowing how to light a fire outside is imperative. Learn how to light a fire in five easy steps:
1. Start by collecting as much dry wood as possible to get you through the night. While there is light gather as much as possible.
2. Using dry light tinder, start a small fire using either a flint or if you have packed it, a lighter or matches. You will need to find some tinder to start your fire; dry grasses, bark or moss can work well.
3. Once you have the tinder lit start adding more dry twigs as kindling, if you cant find any thing dry enough use a knife to shave a branch until you get to the dryer core, this is referred to as feathering. Keep adding these shaving until your fire builds up enough heat. A tomahawk is a handy too as it allows you to split wood to expose the dryer centre.
4. Hopefully once you have enough heat you can start building up your fire in a tepee shape to allow for maximum airflow.
5. As the fire generates more heat lager logs can be added. You may wish to border your fire with rocks.
