How to make damper on a campfire

Damper is easy to make. Just create a dough, kneed it, then wrap it around a skewer and cook it over a campfire. It is delicious eaten with vegemite or jam. and a fun activity to do with the kids.

Its fairly easy to prepare in a bowl by the campside, but you could always prepare the dough before heading out, then cook it over the campfire later.

This recipe will make 4 damper skewers.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1-2 cups milk
  • ΒΌ tsp salt
  • 4 skewers or clean sticks

If you wish, you can add coconut, raisins, cinnamon, or a dash of golden syrup during kneeding to make a sweet damper.

Method:

Add the flour and butter to a bowl. Using your hands, rub in the butter so that the mix becomes crumbly.

Add in the salt and sugar, and a little of the milk. Kneed in the milk, then continue gradually adding the milk to create a dough.

Divide the dough into four pieces. Roll them between your hands, then wrap them around the skewers.

Hold the skewer over the campfire and cook until the damper is browned.

Serve with your favourite toast spread.
