If you are lost in the bush, knowing how to increase your chances of rescue is important. Here are three SOS tips:
Smoke Signal
If you see a plane or helicopter overhead use a smoke signal to attract them. The best way to do this is to have on hand some green plant matter on hand that will create lots of smoke. Fan smoke using something that will create a decent draught. Smoke is an extremely efficient way to be spotted from the sky. At night light three fires in a line or triangle about 30m apart. This is an international signal for distress.
Reflective Surfaces
Using a reflective surface you can also attract an overfly craft by reflecting sunlight. If you have a mirror that works the best otherwise shine up any metal surface that reflects the sun well.
SOS Sign
If there is a clearing nearby use whatever material you can get to create a large SOS sign. Bright colours stand out more in the bush.
